This year we really looked at how our customers are browsing. What they are telling us and what they are asking for. It was based on this and the positive response so far that we decided to continue our expansion rapidly.

There are a number of reasons why people are worried about shopping on the net. Seeing the number of scams, fraudulent activities and concern about giving personal details across the net are just a few of the reasons people rather go to a store.
We went into some detail on url strings in my last post.
So here are some more basics:
1. Look for security seals or association with accredited organizations including BBB – Better Business Bureau, McAfee, Trust E, SSL Certification. Having a combination or atleast one of these safety seals helps ensure you are on a secure site and page for the website.
2. Many experienced online retailers have a lot of information to give you at the point of payment, from next steps, to last minute questions, online help and the option to call. This is good, giving you more information and additional peace of mind at this stage means a retailer knows what they are doing and they want to ensure you are safe and happy with your purchase.
3. As much as you want to ensure that the site you are visiting is safe. It is also important to make sure your own computer is safe, always ensure you have a good anti-virus package on your computer and protection against spyware i.e. McAfee, Norton Anti-Virus or Symantec – all available at a low cost with good basic protection options. This also helps you ensure your own safety as you browse and enter personal information.
4. You should always get an order confirmation as soon as you place an order with details on your order, who to contact and what to expect. This is standard procedure for good sites. Ensure this happens and follow up immediately if you do not receive confirmation.

I wanted to go over some of the be the benefits of shopping online for furniture. Firstly the online furniture market is growing at a rate of 23% from last year to this year. The trend towards shopping online for larger items is definitely catching on with more people as we become more and more comfortable with the net and the concept of buying even some higher priced items online. As we started building the company and I looked more and more into products and how to portray them on the web, I became more comfortable and confident that purchasing higher price items on the web does work and in many cases is as good or better then going to several stores.
Here are some key tips:
1. Don’t just look at price, always see to what level of detail a company describes a product and how good the image is. A good example of a product I would buy online is the Brooklyn Bed With A Raised Panel The description gives a full explanation of the intrinsic structure of the bed. The Features section gives you specific details on dimensions and weight. The image and options give you all the data on the look and style of the bed. Whenever you are buying online always ensure that you are getting as much information as possible about the product.
2. I actually think sites that do this well can give you more information then a local retailer in terms of intrinsic details related to each item.
3. One of the greatest things about shopping online is that you can browse thousands of products and options on a website. Think how many times you go to a store and they have furniture which is not exactly what you want. However as you got through their catalogue you end up finding something you like. Without seeing this item you buy it from the catalog picture. The same applies for web shopping except you have a lot more choice from a wider range of suppliers. And you can do your browsing in the comfort of your own home without anyone pressuring you to buy an item. If you need more questions answered just pick up the phone and call or chat online with an experienced and friendly customer service professional.
4. Read the policies – the most professional web companies will have clear policies on shipping, ordering, cancellations and returns. Be sure to read and feel comfortable with these policies. Each company is unique so check the policies out. I would be vary of companies that don’t give this information or are to restricted in their policies.
5. Always call if you haven’t dealt with a company before. You will get to know how good they are with customer service, if they are legitimate and if they are helpful in giving you the details needed to make your decision. This will boost your confidence and help you feel that you made the right decision to order.
I will go into more details on payment processing and safety in my next blog. This is one of the most important reasons that we don’t feel confident buying online per a recent survey in Furniture Today with over 53% of shoppers worried about security.
